Updated 12:00The Pennines just east of the city see snow far more often than Manchester itself — when the M62 over the hills turns white, the city centre is often still wet.
How to read the snow map
Each type of precipitation has its colour, each colour four steps: the darker, the heavier.
Blue is snow
The darker the blue, the heavier it snows — from light flurries to over a millimetre of water an hour, roughly a centimetre of fresh snow.
Lilac is sleet
Wet snow, or rain and snow together. Typical where the snow line sits: it rarely settles, but roads and pavements turn to slush.
Pink is freezing rain
Freezing rain, freezing drizzle and ice pellets. Even a little of it glazes roads, so pink stays bright even when the rate is low.
Green is rain
Liquid precipitation. Where green meets blue, that is the snow line right now.
