Frequently asked questions

Where does the lightning data come from?
Strikes are recorded by a lightning detection network: each symbol sits where the strike was located. Storm cells are calculated by a weather model that combines the energy in the atmosphere (CAPE) with rainfall intensity.
How far away is the storm I can see?
Sound travels about 340 metres a second: count the seconds between the flash and the thunder and multiply by 340. Three seconds is roughly a kilometre. On the map you can read the distance directly, because every strike sits at its measured position.
Will the page warn me when a storm is coming?
No. This page shows what's happening now: you have to open it. The app does the warning, with a push notification about 30 minutes before a cell reaches you, even when it's closed. Get the app →
