D.C. sits right on the usual rain–snow line of East Coast storms: the northern and western suburbs often get snow while the city gets sleet or rain.

How to read the snow map

Each type of precipitation has its color, each color four steps: the darker, the heavier.

Blue is snow

The darker the blue, the heavier it snows — from light flurries to bands dropping close to half an inch of snow an hour.

Lilac is sleet and wet snow

Wet snow, or rain and snow mixed. It marks the rain–snow line of a winter storm: roads turn to slush fast.

Pink is freezing rain

Freezing rain, freezing drizzle and ice pellets — what makes an ice storm. Even a little glazes roads and power lines, so pink stays bright at any rate.

Green is rain

Liquid precipitation. Where green meets blue, that is the rain–snow line right now.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the snow map get its data?
From the open ECMWF model (the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). Every three hours it says how much is falling and in what form — rain, sleet, snow or ice. That is model data, not a measured radar scan: in exchange the map shows what is falling, which a plain rain radar cannot.
Is it snowing in Washington, D.C. right now?
Look at the map: blue over Washington means snow is falling now. The table under it shows snowfall in inches per hour and ice risk every three hours for the next 24 hours.
What does “ice risk” in the table mean?
High — freezing rain or freezing drizzle is forecast. Medium — it is around 32 °F or below and wet, so roads can ice over (black ice) or snow can stick. Low — it is cold, up to about 36 °F. It is our estimate from the forecast, not an official warning: winter storm and ice storm warnings come from the National Weather Service.
How far ahead does it go?
The map runs from two hours ago to one hour ahead, and the table covers the next 24 hours. Hour-by-hour detail and 48 hours ahead are in the app.
Can I get a warning before snow or ice?
Not from this page — you have to open it yourself. The app can: it sends a push before snow or freezing rain starts where you are, even when it is closed. Get the app →
